Ommegang Three Philosphers 20008

Style:Quadrupel
Alc %:9.8
Brewery:Ommegang Brewery
Country:USA
Tap/Bottle?:bottle
Where/When:Nov 09
Cost:approx $2 or 3
Rating:5.5

pours dark brown with a slight orange edge and a head that disappears
a very low key nose
herbal/medicinal/sarsaparilla taste up front with some toasted malts smoothing things out.
Drinkable but not really my thing.

Ommegang Abbey Ale

Style:Dubbel
Alc %:8.5
Brewery:Ommegang Brewery
Country:USA
Tap/Bottle?:bottle
Where/When:New York 09
Cost:approx $2
Rating:8.5

pours dark brown with an off white head
cant pick the nose, BA says it's mild clove with a hint of anised
sweet, rich and spicey with high carbonation adding to the spicey feel/sensation.
Sweet and juicy fruits up front with a powdery mid note, finishing with a slight bitterness on the end.
The alcohol is kinda deceiving as i'd drink this in the place of a Guiness/stout.
This is a very good beer - better by far than the nose belies.
8.5/10

Abita Purple Haze

Style:Wheat/ Fruit Beer
Alc %:4.2
Brewery:Abita Brewing
Country:USA
Tap/Bottle?:bottle
Where/When:Nov 09
Cost:approx $2
Rating:6.5

Little head that all but disappears
Pours a pale gold with lots of bubbles
A definite hit of raspberry fruit on the nose
A bit of raspberry up front, a beery/wheaty middle with quite a super berry bitterness at the end- i think the last berry note is as close as you could get to a real raspberry after taste. i think the brewers did really well. it's quite spritzy and a little spicey.

Style:American Double/Imperial IPA

Nice off white head that sticks around
pours v dark, copper brown colour
light bit of sweet citrus on the nose
big flavour of course
apricot and molasses up front
slight bit of funkyniss with that molasses
v little bitterness, but it seems a little burnt like
juicy in the mouth
overall i don't care for this... too funky

Rating:8

Dark copper, slight off white head
bit of raisin and citrus on the nose
bit of citrus and tea up front
bit of caramel- little hint of grapefruit
clean, crisp and fresh. bit of malt sweetness toward the end,
Solidly good example of an ipa

Anchor Liberty Ale

Style:American Pale Ale
Alc %:6.0
Brewery:Anchor Brewing
Country:CA, USA
Tap/Bottle?:bottle
Where/When:09
Cost:approx $2
Rating:9

Cloudy copper appearance with an nice fluffy head.
bit of sweet apricot on the nose.
ohhh i like this, a bit of sweet maltiness-the apricot is there but not to sharp
so, clean, fruity and malty.
This could be the pale ale i've been looking for, more citrusy than pine-y
really very drinkable and moreish. Fairly high alcohol level but i would totally have this for a session beer 100%.

Delirium Nocturnum

Style:Belgian Strong Dark Ale
Alc %:8.5
Brewery:Brouwerij Huyghe
Country:Belgium
Tap/Bottle?:bottle
Where/When:NY
Cost:???
Rating:5.5

Pours dark with a coffee coloured head that dissapears
Very dark brown.
herbal nose, medicinal like
sweet, lightly funky, a little spicy, there is a chocolate/caramel thing going on which fades when some bitter hops kick in and add to a slightly funky finish.
Quite unique, not sessionable in my opinion but that's just my preference.
A little like a sasoin in my opinion, tho not as funky.
The sweet taste i dig, but after that it loses me.
Carbonation seems mild.
I had a Delirium Tremens on Saturday and I really loved it-quite similar to Duvel really, a very very nice beer.

Rogue Mocha Porter

Style:American Porter
Alc %: 5.3
Brewery: Rogue Brewing
Country:US
Tap/Bottle?:bottle
Where/When:New York 09
Cost:approx $2
Rating:6

coffee coloured head that dissapears quick
can't pick the nose
pours almost black, tinge of red on the edge
little metallic, spritzy carbonation. not heavy but filling
coffee, roasted malts but not really much chocolate tho it does have a slight
bitter end note
bit of a let down given it's name-not as good as a coopers or sheafs stout.

Rogue Dead Guy Ale

Style:German Maibock
Alc %:6.5
Brewery:Rogue Brewing
Country:US
Tap/Bottle?:bottle
Where/When:New York 09
Cost:approx $2

pour with a small white head
mildly beery nose
nice light copper colour

easy drinking with an end note of ???
7/10

Anchor Porter

Style:Porter
Alc %:5.6
Brewery:Anchor Brewing
Country:US
Tap/Bottle?:bottle
Where/When:New York 09
Cost:approx $2
Rating:6

creamy light coffee coloured head
light coffee nose
very dark brown to almost black
had this after 2 imp ipa
seems very mild, almost light, tho smooth
served at room temp
a light bitterness
looking for something more but it's just not there- I didn't dislike it, it just didn't hit the spot.

Dogfish Head 90 Minute Imperial IPA

Style:US Imperial IPA
Alc %:9
Brewery:Dogfish Head Brewing
Country:US
Tap/Bottle?:bottle
Where/When:New York 09
Cost:approx $2
Rating:9

Very little head.. all but goes
bit cloudy medium dark copper
medium strong nose of.... sweet, with a little spice
lovely creamy sweetness up front, juicy, fruity cordial in the nicest freshest way
this is hop oil done right- lovely bit of pine at the end that has a nice note of bitterness...
also a champagne-like thing going on too
another excellent Imperial IPA, strong in alcohol but deceiving-
maybe not a session beer but it would be hard to stop drinking this 1 all the same.
Well pleased that a well know brewery like this doesn't disappoint!!
9/10. Esquire magazine cals this "perhaps the best IPA in America" and I agree.

Victory Hop Wallop

Style:US IPA
Alc %:8.5
Brewery:Victory Brewing Co.
Country:USA
Tap/Bottle?:bottle
Where/When:New York 09
Cost:approx $2
Rating:9

Bubbly fluffy head, white and disappears
pours cloudy marmalade colour
light on the nose but.......
lovely citrus fruit up front that's followed by a strongly toasted malt flavour
lastly a nice bit of bitterness to finish off with
This is the best IPA I've had yet, it's an imperial, but it's the best bottled IPA I've tasted ever!
Hurrah!
9/10

Magic Hat HI.P.A

Style:US IPA
Alc %:5.8
Brewery:Magic Hat Brewing Company
Country:US
Tap/Bottle?:bottle
Where/When:New York 09
Cost:approx $2
Rating:6.5

Very little head
cloudy, dark copper pour
not as big and robust as the Stone ipa on first tasting...
has a little of that cold tea taste, then some mild (toasted) malt comes thru followed by mild bitterness
smooth....
I gotta say I was expecting just a tad more...boldness.
The brewery calls this a "Spring IPA" and is released at said time.

Stone IPA

Style:US IPA
Alc %:6.9
Brewery:Stone Brewing
Country:US
Tap/Bottle?:bottle
Where/When:New York 09
Cost:approx $2
Rating:7

Nice white fuffy head that dissapears and laces to the glass
the taste is quite big...burnt citrus fades to malt followed with hoppy bitterness.
This is a pretty good beer, with strong alc % that is deceiving- at the same time it's fairly moreish
Tho not quite what i was hoping for all the same.
